Calligraphy is an inherent part of the Japanese language. Contrary to Chinese calligraphy, Japanese calligraphy deals with three systems of writing, the Chinese characters and the two syllabaries used in Japanese. Japanese make extensive use of it in everyday life. For example here, at the front door of a ryokan.
